Fiber Materials – Some Highlights:- Maximum
Operating Temp: Basalt fiber typically handles continuous temperatures
up to 700°C (1292°F), significantly higher than standard E-glass. - UV
Resistance: Unlike Carbon fiber, Basalt is naturally UV resistant,
making it ideal for outdoor structural and marine applications. - Acid
Resistance: Basalt is highly resistant to strong acids and alkalis,
outperforming E-glass in harsh chemical environments. - Fire
Resistance: It is inherently non-combustible. It doesn’t just resist
fire; it acts as a superior fire barrier with high structural integrity
during heat exposure. - Concrete
Reinforcement: Yes, Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) is a
corrosion-free alternative to steel rebar, offering higher tensile
strength and lower weight. - Tensile
Strength: Basalt roving offers a tensile strength of approximately 3000-4800
MPa, which is higher than most glass fibers. - Sustainability:
Basalt is made from 100% natural volcanic rock through a single-component
melting process, making it one of the most eco-friendly technical
fibers. - Cryogenic
Performance: It maintains its properties and flexibility at extremely
low temperatures, unlike many synthetic fibers that become brittle. - Electrical
Conductivity: Basalt is a non-conductive insulator, making it
safe for use around electrical components and sensitive tech. - Basalt
vs. Silica Cloth: While Silica handles higher peaks (up to 1000°C),
Basalt offers much higher mechanical strength and durability at its 700°C
limit. - Safety/Handling:
Basalt fibers have a larger diameter than asbestos or ceramic fibers, so
they are not respirable and generally cause less skin irritation
than fiberglass. - Pultrusion:
Basalt roving is excellent for pultrusion, creating high-strength profiles
for construction and aerospace. - Abrasion
Resistance: It is significantly more abrasion-resistant than Kevlar
and glass, making it perfect for protective sleeves and hose covers. - Sound
Insulation: The dense nature of basalt needle mats provides
exceptional acoustic dampening for industrial machinery and automotive
engines. - Exhaust
Heat Wrap: Basalt is the “gold standard” for exhaust wraps
because it doesn’t get brittle after heat cycles like fiberglass does. - Corrosion:
Basalt is completely rust-proof and immune to the “glass
rot” often seen in standard fiberglass exposed to moisture. - Resin
Compatibility: It bonds exceptionally well with epoxy, polyester, and
vinylester resins, often requiring less sizing than glass. - Fire
Ratings: Adding basalt fabric to a composite layup significantly
increases the fire-smoke-toxicity (FST) rating of the final part. - Cost-Effectiveness:
While slightly more expensive than E-glass, its lifespan and performance
often provide a better long-term ROI, especially in corrosive
environments. - Needle
Mat Applications: Used primarily for engine heat shields, oven
insulation, and turbine blankets where flexible, high-density insulation
is required.
